CRA's Outstanding Undergraduate Award program recognizes undergraduate students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. Nominees are nominated by the department chair or a faculty member. Each department may nominate a total of two male and two female candidates. Preference is given to students in their senior year. In addition to evidence of significant research contributions, the committee also considers the student's academic record and service to the community.

Last Sunday, 11/16, The department's soccer team, Bytesoccer, became the champion of the Brown Intramural Fall 2003 Middle Division Outdoor Soccer League. On September 18, 2003, John Crawford ’75 of Intel will kick off the Computer Science Department’s gala celebration of its 25th anniversary with his talk, “20 Years of Growth in Microprocessor Performance: A Look Back and a Glimpse Ahead”. John, one of the first concentrators in CS at Brown (back when it was merely a Program, not a Department), has achieved great prominence at Intel through his work on microprocessor architecture and is now an Intel Fellow and Director of its Itanium Architecture group. The CS92 "Firefighters" program, built last year in collaboration with Marcella Weinberg's 2nd graders at the Charles N. Fortes Magnet Academy Museum School in the Elmwood section of Providence, was recently featured on Intel's "Innovation Odyssey" web site (http://www97.intel.com/education/odyssey/day_319/day_319.htm). Pascal Van Hentenryck and Laurent Michel won the best paper award for their paper 'Control Abstractions for Local Search'about part of the Comet System featured in the last issue of conduit! (great timing, isn't it!). The paper describes novel control abstractions to simplify the development, compositionality, and reuse of local search algorithms. It builds on the constraint-based architecture presented last year at OOPLSA 2002. About 184 papers were submitted, 48 of which were accepted.

We heard yesterday that Maurice Herlihy's paper on 'wait-free synchronization'is the 2003 winner of the Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing. The Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing is given to an outstanding paper on the principles of distributed computing, whose significance and impact on the theory and/or practice of distributed computing has been evident for at least a decade.

Andrew McClain, a CS major and CS 15 UTA who completed his senior thesis on 'CaveSculpting: Creating sculpture from CavePaintings' and received his Brown B.A. yesterday, conceived and co-created 'Screen', a written-text virtual-reality installation featured in the Boston Cyberarts festival. Next year he will attend the MFA Acting Program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

We're happy to announce that David Reiss, a junior concentrating in Computer Science, has been named a Faculty Scholar for the 03-04 academic year. The Faculty Scholars fund was established in 1982 through the gifts of the University's faculty and friends to provide scholarship and fellowship aid to undergraduate or graduate students, with preference given to those who have demonstrated academic excellence. David is one of seven Faculty Scholars for next year.
